Chapter 16
Chauncey Was Always a Good Girl
Ruby
"So who's on your top ten of authors?" Ruby asks Lou who has come to sit beside her at her usual drawing table.
"Do you read?" he asks, his dimple a lot like Al's fickle one.
"No, not really. I like biographies though," she says brightly.
"Me too. You know, I've found myself writing a short story about a woman who has a very similar essence to yours."
"Really?"
"Yes. She's bold, very adventurous, yet fragile and warm, unsure of her power."
"Is this the character you're describing, or me?"
"Both." He looks at her as if appraising what's between her temples. "I'd love it if you read it. Her name's Sabrina. She doesn't look much like you, she doesn't have the little I know about your history, but you'll recognize her all the same. I'd love to have your opinion."
"My blessing?" She puts her hand at the neck of her yellow tank top.
"Haven't you ever based a cartoon on someone you knew?"
"Yes, but I wouldn't want them to know it!" She laughs.
"Well, okay." He puts both hands up, his light palms deeply lined in the rich dark color of his skin. "If you don't want to read it, I understand." He gets up, his teeth shining down on her a brilliant white.
"How about this? I'll read it when it's published."
"That won't help me, now will it?" He moves his chin into his neck, looks at her from beneath a canopy of brow.
"I don't mind what you do with her. Really." Ruby smiles.
"I always do what is necessary for the truth of any story."
"Okay. So write away!" she says, flashing a higher wattage smile. This she does to ingratiate herself for preferring to be alone at the moment. Pencil back in hand, she nods and Lou returns to the back, busying himself with the leaky faucet in the bathroom.
Instead of drawing, she eyes the computer, gets up, stretching her back, stiff from practicing too many dives off the board of Wanda and Lou's pool. Rayâwho supervised each one for safety and formâtold her not to overdo it, but she can't help the hurry she's in to physically seize each day. It's her head she's had on hold, never letting much get deeply to her. She has been considering these past eight months since the murders a brain holiday.
She logs onto the computer three tables down from the only other customer in the place. She looks up at the burnt orange wall with small, framed, black-and-white photographs of Philadelphia street scenes, then writes to [email protected].
Happy New Year, Jeannie!!! How was your Christmas? I left you two messages, did you get them? Hope you liked the jewelry box. You know it's made of rosewoodâcouldn't resistâit had both your names on it ;)~
Ray made me a fur bikini. He'd gotten the fur in Alaska and hid his sewing all this time! He did an amazing job, especially for someone who has never done it before. Then he took me out for a boat ride,
